You could own this dilapidated 1960s NASA robot - CNET

Enlarge Image RR Auction The Power-Driven Articulated Dummy is a strange aside in NASA's space race story, and now you can own it. The space suit testing robot is going up for grabs as part of RR Auctions' Remarkable Rarities Auction. The human body is not designed for space. As we get into higher and higher altitudes, as air pressure lowers and eventually becomes the vacuum of space, the survival rate of an unprotected human body lowers. This is why astronauts wear those chunky suits as they move around in space. Those suits, among other things, provide a stable inte al pressure that keeps the wearer's body from swelling up from the effects of decompression. This is where the Power-Driven Articulated Dummy ca...

Watch a double eclipse of the sun as seen from outer space - CNET

[embedded content] Twice a year, around the time of the autumnal and ve al equinoxes, is the Solar Dynamics Observatory's eclipse season. From its vantage point in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth, the SDO's view of the sun is blocked once a day by the Earth. And on the rare occasion, both the Earth and the moon pass between the SDO and the sun -- a rare double eclipse. One of these took place on September 1, when first the Earth, then the moon, were captured blocking out the sun as the SDO filmed the whole thing in hi-res. It's not quite as dramatic as a solar eclipse take from the Earth, but it's still interesting if you know what you're looking at. Normally a solar eclipse seen from Earth, as the moon passes between the sun and us, ...

Jupiter's north pole is totally weird - CNET

Enlarge ImageThis image was taken about two hours prior to Juno's closest approach to Jupiter. NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI/MSSS Jupiter's south pole was well documented by Cassini on its way to Satu , but the north pole (home of Jovian Santa, one could only assume) has remained much more mysterious. This is set to change with the arrival of Jupiter probe Juno, which completed its first flyby of the north pole on August 27 and has already started delivering. On that flyby, Juno got busy taking photos with its JunoCam instrument from a distance of just 4,200 kilometres (2,500 miles) above Jupiter's clouds as it travelled over a period of six hours from the north pole to the south. The resulting 6 MB of data took NASA...

Fugitive used wanted poster as his Facebook profile pic, say police - CNET

Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.Enlarge ImageA bit of a giveaway? Stuart Police Department/ Facebook I've never been on the run, though some days I think I know what it feels like.I feel sure, however, that if I was trying to evade capture by the police, I would check my Facebook page to make sure there wasn't anything incriminating on it.This was allegedly not the case with Mack Yearwood. As the Stuart Police Department in Florida said on its Facebook page: "If you are wanted by the police, it's probably not a good idea to use the 'Wanted of the Week' poster of yourself as your profile pic."The Stuart police were looking for Yearwood in connection ...

Are iPhone prices giving you heartburn? Consider your options - CNET

If the price tag of a new phone makes you sweat, you're not alone.Since all four major carriers have done away with their device subsidies, US consumers for the first time are seeing how much their fancy phones actually cost. And it's not pretty. While we've all been trained to lust for the latest Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy gadget, which cost a small fortune, the reality is that you can still get a pretty sophisticated, good-quality phone for a fraction of the price. In this edition of Ask Maggie, I spell out options for a frugal shopper. Dear Maggie,My old phone is on the fritz. I need a new one stat, but the prices are horrifying. I've heard old iPhones drop in price right after the new iPhones come out. Is the drop substantial? I don't want a used or pre-owned phone, so what advice ...

Star Trek's Jeri Ryan reaaaaally wants a transporter - CNET

As part of our coverage of Star Trek's 50th anniversary, I talked with a dozen cast members from across the franchise about everything from Star Trek's inclusive message to how it feels to be a sex symbol to nerds. Jeri Ryan didn't want the role at first. The then up-and-comer was trying to kickstart her career after ea ing a theater degree and winning the Miss Illinois beauty pageant (she later competed in Miss America, coming in fourth place). "I wasn't remotely interested in science fiction," Ryan said of her pre-Star Trek days. Sure, she'd watched some episodes of the original series. But she'd also heard the shows had a history of stymieing some actor's careers. Then Ryan read about her character, Seven of Nine, a human kidnapped as a young girl by...

Star Trek stars spill insider tales of epic ad-libs, favorite captains - CNET

Got a Star Trek story? Maybe, like me, you dressed in starship captain uniforms for Halloween and snuck into the family room past your bedtime to watch reruns, no matter how tired you'd be the next day at school. Or maybe you never watched Star Trek, but you still know the difference between Klingons and Romulans. At the very least, you probably know how to separate your fingers into the iconic Vulcan salute and offer up a "Live long and prosper." With the Star Trek franchise tu ing 50 on September 8, I asked a dozen cast members from six of Star Trek's TV shows and movies, including Zoe Saldana, Gates McFadden and Jeri Ryan, to share their stories. During the next week, CNET's Star Trek at 50 package will showcase those tales in separate articles focusin...

Greece's refugee crisis through a different lens - CNET

This is part of our Road Trip 2016 summer series "Life, Disrupted," about how technology is helping with the global refugee crisis -- if at all.The main street in Mytilene, on the Greek island of Lesvos, wraps around the green-tinted Aegean like a horseshoe. Brightly painted buildings line the road while wooden sailboats bob near the pier. It's beautiful. It's also where I bump into Waleed, a young boy I'd met earlier that day at the gate of the Kara Tepe refugee camp just outside town.He was fishing with two other migrants.I ask where his mom is. He points back toward the camp. "Kara Tepe," he tells me.And his father?"Dad. Syria. Psh, Psh," he says, pointing a finger to his head while imitating the sound of gunfire.I say, "I'm sorry," but he shrugs it off. That's life in Syria, where he ca...

Refugees and tech: Scenes from a Greek tragedy - CNET

This is part of our Road Trip 2016 summer series "Life, Disrupted," about how technology is helping with the global refugee crisis -- if at all. Most people think of Greece as a great place to escape from the stress of everyday life. But not to the more than 57,000 people now trapped there. In 2015, more than 1.1 million refugees and migrants fled war and chaos in the Middle East and Africa to seek shelter in Europe. More than two-thirds of them came through Greece on their way to places like Germany, Sweden and the UK. That changed in March, when an agreement between the EU and Turkey -- combined with nearby countries' decisions to close their borders to migrants -- transformed Greece from an entry point to a dead end. Yet they still come. Even knowing they face life in limbo, refugee...
