Greece's refugee crisis through a different lens - CNET

  • This is part of our Road Trip 2016 summer series "Life, Disrupted," about how technology is helping with the global refugee crisis -- if at all.The main street in Mytilene, on the Greek island of Lesvos, wraps around the green-tinted Aegean like a horseshoe. Brightly painted buildings line the road while wooden sailboats bob near the pier. It's beautiful. It's also where I bump into Waleed, a young boy I'd met earlier that day at the gate of the Kara Tepe refugee camp just outside town.He was fishing with two other migrants.I ask where his mom is. He points back toward the camp. "Kara Tepe," he tells me.And his father?"Dad. Syria. Psh, Psh," he says, pointing a finger to his head while imitating the sound of gunfire.I say, "I'm sorry," but he shrugs it off. That's life in Syria, where he came from. It was another reminder of the pain refugees have faced both at home and in Greece, where they fled to safety. The pain often sits just under the surface, bubbling up after they talk about th,greece, greece map, greece flag, greece news, greece currency, greece islands, greece ridge mall, greece vacations, greece beaches, greece economy ...ادامه مطلب

  • Scenes from Greece's refugee crisis: Tales of tech - CNET

  • Most people think of Greece as a great place to escape from the stress of everyday life. But not to the more than 57,000 people now trapped there. In 2015, thousands of refugees and migrants fled war and chaos in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq and headed to Europe seeking shelter. A year later, many are living in squalid camps and abandoned buildings in Greece, waiting for asylum or a chance at legal residence in the European Union. During a 10-day trip in June, we talked to officials, migrants and activists in Athens, Lesvos -- the Greek island where most refugees first set foot in Europe last year -- and Thessaloniki, near the closed border of Macedonia, shutting migrants' way out. Our mission: to see if the technology that many of us use every day -- phones, the inteet, messaging apps, social networks -- is helping during this crisis. Or not. We met people from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Morocco and Somalia, all on a jouey they hoped would take them to safer and better lives. Everyone (except the children) has a phone. All rely on the inteet to lea what's new and important. Facebook is a tool for escape and escapism. Power strips are the new watercoolers. Here are a few stories of their stories.Google it Five men sit around a battered, wooden patio table just outside the gate at Kara Tepe, an official refugee camp on Lesvos. All have their phones plugged into two power strips on top of the table. Smoke wafts from their cigarettes. Beko Al-Falahi, a 28-year-old from Iraq, tells us he used to work as a US Army translator. He's wearing a camo hat, flip-flops and a shirt that reads, "Grace isn't a little prayer you say before receiving a meal. It's a way of life."In April, Pope Francis visited migrant detention centers on the Greek island of Lesvos. Beko Al-Falahi shows a photo of the Pope holding his son Tayim. • News anchor playing Pokemon Go strolls through live weather forecast - CNET

  • [embedded content]Weatherman Bobby Deskins with WTSP 10 News in Florida was in the middle of a normal forecast on Monday moing, talking about the temperature, when news anchor Allison Kropff walked in front of him and his weather map while staring intently at Pokemon Go on her phone. Kropff shared a video of the humorous incident on her Facebook page with the caption "That moment you realize you may be addicted to ‪#‎PokemonGO‬...."The Pokemon stunt appears to have been staged all in good fun, though it's unclear if Deskins was in on the planning. His laugh seems genuine and he comments, "You guys got to be careful with these phones and these Pokemon. You're just walking around all over." You can hear laughter coming from the WTSP team in the background.Pokemon Go has become quite the gaming phenomenon, leading players into all sorts of strange real-world situations. One woman discovered a dead body in the course of the game. Another Pokemon Go hunter fell into a pond. That makes Kropff's live-on-air stroll seem pretty tame by comparison. There's no word on which Pokemon creature Kropff was pursuing or if she caught the little monster. • China cracks down on news sites using social media sources - CNET

  • China has issued a waing to news sites over using social media as a source. César Salza/CNET China has issued a crackdown on online news organisations across the country, waing them not use social media as a source without carefully verifying and fact-checking claims first. The Cyberspace Administration of China issued the directive, with the state media agency Xinhua reporting that the move was made in a bid to combat "false news.""It is forbidden to use hearsay to create news or use conjecture and imagination to distort the facts," Xinhua reported, according to a translation in the South China Moing Post. "All websites should bear the key responsibility to further streamline the course of reporting and publishing of news, and set up a sound inteal monitoring mechanism among all mobile news portals [and the social media chat websites] Weibo or WeChat," it said. It's not the first time that China's vexed relationship with censorship and the inteet has been in the spotlight. • Roku is making it easier for viewers to catch up on the news by adding it into its universal search feature. The search feature -- which is available on current Roku streaming boxes, the Streaming Stick and televisions that have the Roku platform built-in -- now allows for entering in a topic such as "Apple" or "NBA," and will retrieve a listing of videos pertaining to that topic from across many of streaming news channels on the platform. These include news broadcasts from the four major US networks -- such as ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX -- as well as from digital outlets like Yahoo (Disclosure: CBS is the parent company of CNET). The streaming company announced the addition in a blog post on Friday. And what if you don't have a specific topic in mind? • Now, this is how to use YouTube to create news - CNET

  • Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.Enlarge ImageSo very clever. Licor Beirão; YouTube screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET You don't like soccer? OK, you can go. But wait. You like liquor, don't you? Please stay then and consider the clever maneuverings of Portuguese liquor brand Licor Beirão. It placed an ad alongside the field at a recent soccer match between England and Portugal. During the game, a Portuguese player accidentally kicked England star Harry Kane in the head. This happened right in front of the Licor Beirão ad. Given that the Euro 2016 European soccer championship began Friday, the company thought it would capitalize on this dramatic piece of action. So it took to YouTube and created a video that's beautifully intelligent. The company didn't want its liquor brand to be associated with, well, a headache. So please watch a work of art that is so meticulously wise that you imagine the product must be too.It takes the form of an apology letter, but it's so much more than that.Though its govemental processes can sometimes resemble a 3-card trick with 17 cards, Portugal has a long history of entrepreneurship -- and excellence in food and drink. On a recent visit, I experienced the astonishingly soulful creativity of 26-year-old Marco Silva at Lisbon's Raizes restaurant. (Sample: One night Silva announced that we'd be drinking only wine made by Portugal's finest women winemakers.)At the Ervideira winery, I tasted not only invisible wine, but also wine that had been aged at the bottom of a lake.Creativity is at the heart of many of Portugal's finest elements -- even its soccer team, one that enjoys the world's second best player (though he doesn't think so), Cristiano Ronaldo. Licor Beirão's YouTube creativity has already enjoyed more than 327,000 views in three days. Even more than that, in a place where comm, ...ادامه مطلب
