Watch a double eclipse of the sun as seen from outer space - CNET

  • [embedded content] Twice a year, around the time of the autumnal and veal equinoxes, is the Solar Dynamics Observatory's eclipse season. From its vantage point in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth, the SDO's view of the sun is blocked once a day by the Earth. And on the rare occasion, both the Earth and the moon pass between the SDO and the sun -- a rare double eclipse. One of these took place on September 1, when first the Earth, then the moon, were captured blocking out the sun as the SDO filmed the whole thing in hi-res. It's not quite as dramatic as a solar eclipse take from the Earth, but it's still interesting if you know what you're looking at. Normally a solar eclipse seen from Earth, as the moon passes between the sun and us, has sharp crisp edges, but a lunar eclipse, where the Earth passes between the sun and the moon, is a little fuzzier. It's the same for the SDO eclipses, but write large. • Dramatic video shows full extent of SpaceX rocket explosion - CNET

  • Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives. An intact Falcon 9. NASA/Getty Images It was just a routine rocket test. However, as the Space X Falcon 9 rocket stood on the launch pad with its Amos-6 satellite, there was an explosion.Video has now emerged of what that explosion looked like.Posted by nonprofit US Launch Report, the video shows a blast of considerable magnitude. A fire started immediately and the top part of the rocket fell to the ground. Then the fire continued the rage, as so many hopes were temporarily bued. As the video of the fire continues, smaller explosions are heard as the fire guts the whole structure. It's all a reminder of how difficult space is and how so much can go wrong so quickly. • Space station orbits over three hurricanes in epic time-lapse video - CNET

  • [embedded content] Hurricanes are scary enough at ground level. View them from space and they look almost unreal, like special effects created in a movie studio. NASA released a time-lapse video on Tuesday showing the Inteational Space Station orbiting over three separate hurricanes. They look both massive and frightening from the station's orbital vantage point. In order, the video shows twin hurricanes Lester and Madeline in the Pacific Ocean and then Gaston in the Atlantic Ocean. Both Lester and Madeline pose a potential threat to the Hawaiian Islands. Gaston is kicking across the Atlantic with wind speeds reaching 100 mph (about 160 kph). Lester is hitting 130 mph (210 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center, and Madeline is reaching 90 mph (150 kph).Astronauts on the space station often bear witness to dramatic Earth weather. Bruce Weaver/AFP/Getty Images Satellite operator SES and rocket maker SpaceX on Tuesday announced plans to launch the SES-10 satellite into orbit on a used Falcon 9 rocket. The SES-10 will replace SES's AMC-3 and AMC-4 satellites to provided expanded telecommunications coverage to Latin America. Luxembourg-based SES said it will be the first company to ever launch a geostationary satellite on a used rocket. The launch is slated for sometime in the fourth quarter. "Re-launching a rocket that has already delivered spacecraft to orbit is an important milestone on the path to complete and rapid reusability," Gwynne Shotwell, president and chief operating officer of SpaceX, said in a statement. • NASA is weeks away from launching an asteroid-thumping spacecraft - CNET

  • NASA hopes to launch a spacecraft next month that will essentially chest-bump an asteroid and swipe a sample of space rock to bring back to Earth for study in the process. The Osiris-Rex spacecraft is about the size of a small bus when its solar arrays are deployed. Right now, the plan is to launch it from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on an Atlas V 411 rocket as soon as September 8 at 7:05 p.m. ET. It's scheduled to reach the potentially hazardous asteroid Bennu at some point in 2018. The craft's epic acronym name stands for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security - Regolith Explorer, which explains what NASA hopes it will do. Those goals include retuing and analyzing a sample, mapping the asteroid and its chemical and mineral makeup and taking a close look at the outermost layer, called regolith.Osiris-Rex will travel to near-Earth asteroid Bennu on a , ...ادامه مطلب

  • July 2016 was Earth's hottest month on record - CNET

  • NASA Goddard Institute of Space Science Three independent agencies have confirmed July 2016 as the warmest month since they started keeping temperature records, the Weather Channel has reported. July is usually the warmest month globally, since the northe hemisphere has more land mass, and land heats up faster and retains more heat than the oceans.NASA's Goddard Institute of Space Studies found it topped the previous warmest July on its record, 2011, by 0.1 of a degree Celsius, 0.84 degrees Celsius above average, making it the warmest since 1880. The Japan Meteorological Agency's found that it was the warmest since 1891, and the Copeicus Climate Change Service in Europe found that it was the warmest since 1979.NASA and the NOAA announced earlier this year that 2015 had been the warmest year on record to date.
