  • Apple Music and Tidal have leaned on exclusives as the battle to catch up to Spotify's lead in subscribers. Taylor Martin/CNET The rivalry between the subscription music giants may be tuing bitter. Spotify has been penalizing some artists who provide music exclusively to its main competitor, Apple Music, according to a Bloomberg report. Citing unnamed people familiar with the practices, the report said Spotify search results bury tunes by artists who give their material to Apple Music first. The company also waed acts it will exclude Apple-exclusive music from featured Spotify playlists once it's available to stream there, the report said. A spokeswoman for Spotify said statements about burying search results are "unequivocally false." She didn't comment on playlist strategy. • Watch police follow erratic driver who was allegedly playing Pokemon Go - CNET

  • Olympic cyclist 'live-tweets' his whole race - CNET

  • Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.Enlarge ImageHe's a tweeter. He's a winner. Dan Craven; Twitter screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET I knew the headline was true, because it was on Twitter.More precisely, it was on the official Twitter Sports feed. It read, "Namibian#Olympics cyclist Tweeted through his entire race."Immediately, I pictured a heaving human with one hand on the handlebars and the other clutching his iPhone. Then I looked at the small print. Beneath Twitter Sports' headline that would no longer pass muster on Facebook was a clarification: "An Olympic cyclist 'live-tweeted' his entire race." (See those extra inverted commas?)The man in question was Namibian cyclist Dan Craven. His Twitter feed did, indeed, have many tweeted observations posted during his race. Some were even amusing. For example, "Now I'm craving a rusk. I'll give a pair of my socks to anyone who brings me a rusk at the finish." (A rusk is a South African/Namibian specialty, a hard dry biscuit that Craven loves -- and tries to avoid -- because of its carb and sugar content.)I did rather adore, "Cross wind. Bugger that. Drinks anyone? How about a caipirinha. #gutter."I was sure that this couldn't have been Craven himself tweeting. But then I espied: "I have magical powers. Front of the peloton. You forget my beard can tweet for itself."Craven does have a substantial growth. Could it be both substantial and versatile? Craven came clean. "My girlfriend Collyn Ahart is a genius. Her day job is marketing strategy. I came up with the idea last night but had no idea she would make such a splash," he told me. Her tweeting process, he said, was very simple. "She just started having fun and ended up having a blast," Craven told me. You, though, will wonder how his race went. I rushed to the results page for his men's road race. It read: "Dan Craven: DNF.", , olympic cyclist , olympic cyclist legs , olympic cyclist vs toaster , olympic cyclist quads , olympic cyclist zika , olympic cyclists 2016 , olympic cyclist robbed , olympic cyclist mugged , olympic cyclist stripped of medal , olympic cyclist robert , ...ادامه مطلب

  • Whoops! Norwegian boys ruin 5,000-year-old rock carving by trying to help - CNET

  • Citizens of the world, stop messing with the art. Earlier this year, a kid in China destroyed a $15,000 Lego statue just an hour after it went on display. And the mangled fresco of Jesus that a Spanish woman awkwardly painted over in 2012 still shows up in memes. Now a pair of Norwegian boys are joining the Roster of Shame. The two saw a 5,000-year-old rock carving of a man on skis on the island of Tro on Norway's west coast and decided it wasn't visible enough, the UK's Telegraph reports. So they took a sharp object and traced over the lines -- and around the lines, and outside the lines, and pretty much made their own scratched-up lines. It's no Potato Jesus, but the Stone Age carving no longer represents its original image. Here's the original, as shown in a tweet from Archaeology magazine: And here's the, uh, "improved" version. The carving was one of the earliest depictions of skiing ever found, and is so iconic that it inspired one of the symbols used for the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer in 1994."The new lines are both in and outside where the old marks had been," said archaeologist Tor-Kristian Storvik. "We will never again be able to experience these carvings again the way we have for the last 5,000 years."The boys have apologized, but still could face prosecution under Norway's Cultural Heritage Act. It's a shame they never leaed where to draw the line. Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Who leaked that 'Suicide Squad' song? Reddit has answers, record label says - CNET

  • Atlantic Records is on the hunt for whoever leaked a song from the "Suicide Squad" soundtrack, and it's demanding Reddit help to find the culprit, according to TorrentFreak. Sometime around June 15, the song "Heathens" by Twenty One Pilots was uploaded to dropfile and leaked to the band's subreddit, a forum made by Reddit users to discuss the band. Atlantic stated in a complaint to a New York court that it gave a digital copy of the song to "an extremely limited number of individuals" before this date, the publication reported. "In each such case, the individual was barred from distributing the recording until the scheduled release date of June 24, 2016," it stated.Enlarge ImageThe leak of the Twenty One Pilots song "Heathens" was a glum day for Atlantic Records. Reddit screenshot by Daniel Van Boom/CNET The user who posted the song goes by the handle of "twentyoneheathens," and the leak was the sole post made on that Reddit account. "Atlantic is unable to determine the true identity of the Poster absent assistance from Reddit, which Atlantic believes to have relevant information conceing the identity of the Poster, including, but not limited to, the originating IP address from which the posting was made," the company reportedly stated in its complaint. Reddit and Atlantic Records did not respond immediately to a request for comment. It would be a big deal, and something of a surprise, if Atlantic is able to identify and punish the rogue user. Despite the growing popularity of services like Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal, music piracy continues to rise. Research firm MUSO estimates there were 2 billion hits to music piracy sites in 2015 alone.Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Who's more passionate about the sound of music: Audiophiles or musicians? - CNET

  • I get off on the sound of live and recorded music, but sometimes the sound interferes with the enjoyment of the music. For example, I wouldn't go to Caegie Hall to see my favorite acoustic artist if the only available tickets were in the upper balconies. I say that because in the past when I've been way up there, I could barely understand the lyrics and the sound was much too reverberant. If I know the venue well, I would never buy a ticket for a seat where the sound isn't up to par. If I don't know the venue, but I can look over a seating plan I can usually make an educated guess. I know from experience if the sound is bad, even if the band is having a great night, I'm not going to be all that happy. Enlarge ImageA Gibson guitar at a recording session. Steve Guttenberg/CNET If I'm up close to the stage and near a speaker stack, there's a good chance the bass will be really muddy and obscure the lyrics. Or if the sound is too loud even with my best earplugs crammed in, finito -- I'm gone. Music is music, but the sound of music affects the way we experience it. Profoundly. It's not just finicky audiophiles who obsess about sound. I know a lot of musicians who crave great-sounding instruments. Hand Eric Clapton a cheap guitar and I have no doubt he could play some nice tunes on it, but the sound would improve immensely if Clapton then played a Gibson acoustic. Same notes, very different sounds. Musicians do care about the sound of their instruments, and a lot of players amass collections of great-sounding ones. And not just the rich ones -- a lot of guys have more than a few instruments hanging on the wall of their tiny New York apartments. It's their thing. It's strange; as much as they care about the sound of their instruments, that doesn't automatically mean they give a hoot about the sound of their own recordings. I attended lots of sessions where the only thing some guys cared about, ...ادامه مطلب
