Microsoft will bring on Genee's co-founders to its team working on Outlook and Office 365. Jim Kerstetter/CNET Microsoft has bought Genee, a technology startup making bots to help set meetings and manage your calendar.The company didn't disclose terms of the takeover in its announcement Monday. Genee's virtual scheduling assistant is powered by natural language processing, artificial intelligence and chat bots. Co-founder Charles Lee said in a blog post that Genee will cease to operate as a stand-alone service next month. He and fellow co-founder Ben Cheung will join Microsoft in the takeover. We've lost R2. Actor Kenny Baker, aka lovable droid R2-D2, in the '70s. Getty Images Kenny Baker, the man who brought the much-loved R2-D2 droid to life in the Star Wars films, passed away at the age of 81 following a long period of illness. Baker's death was reported by The Guardian on Saturday, with his niece Abigail Shield telling the publication that the news was expected but sad. "He had a very long and fulfilled life. He brought lots of happiness to people and we'll be celebrating the fact that he was loved throughout the world. We're all very proud of what he achieved in his lifetime," Shield said. Baker, standing at 3 feet 8 inches tall, first hopped inside the shell of R2-D2 for 1977's "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" and went on to play R2 in five other Star Wars films. Happy National Vinyl Record Day!You might assume millennials are the ones lining up on Record Store Day to drop coin on the latest special edition, 180-gram, splatter-paint record of the month, but you'd be wrong -- at least in the United Kingdom.According to a new study by market research company YouGov, UK music fans between the ages of 45 and 54 are actually more likely to hit record stores in search of vinyl. By contrast, the study found 18- to 24-year-olds are least likely to purchase vinyl, suggesting last year's sales explosion could be attributed to vinyl nostalgia rather than discovery. The study also unearthed two very bleak statistics that are depressing enough to make any collector reconsider this hobby: 56 percent of vinyl buyers tend to keep their feelings to themselves and 69 percent would rather listen to music alone than with a partner.It's worth noting YouGov's findings are based on a sample of UK adults only. Chris Monroe/CNET Samsung Electronics America will buy Dacor, a company that manufacturers luxury kitchen appliances, Samsung announced Wednesday. The acquisition reflects Samsung's continued investment in large home appliance and an interest in the high-end appliance market, where products like ranges and refrigerators carry price tags that reach into five figures. Dacor is a Califoia-based company founded in 1965. The company will keep its name and US operations and manufacturing though it will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung, according to a news release from Samsung. The release didn't provide information on the value of the sale or when it will be final. Samsung declined to comment further. Dacor didn't immediately retu a request for comment. Updated on Thursday, the Apple Store app will now recommend and help you shop for products that work with the Apple devices you already own. So if you purchase an iPad, the app may propose buying a Smart Cover to accompany it. Or if you pick up an iPhone, Apple may suggest a dock to sync and charge the device. For me, the app pointed to a case for my iPhone 6. You see your recommended products as you scroll down the app's Discover screen. The new feature was leaked in late July by Bloomberg. A feature that analyzes your purchase history may strike some people as an intrusion into their private buying habits. Apple has typically depicted itself as a defender of user privacy. But the company is still a retailer, facing competition from the likes of Google and Amazon, both of which tap into data collection to try to decipher the wants and needs of their users. Apple does specify that only the name, model number and part number of your devices are linked to the Apple ID accessed by the app. You can also tu off the feature if you don't want Apple to track your purchases. The latest 4.0 version of the Apple Store app adds other features as well. You can now better manage your Apple account with an Account screen designed to be more user-friendly. Featured workshops and other events at your local Apple retail store will pop up more readily. You'll also be able to see when an order will be ready for pickup and what time an Apple Store reservation will start. Further, you can now scan a product at certain Apple Stores to lea more about it, make sure it's compatible with your existing hardware or software and then buy it through your iPhone. Magnetti Marelli Tech companies are eager to get themselves more involved with the auto industry, whether it's by creating its own automotive projects or by buying up other companies. Samsung appears to be making a move in the latter category, as it's in talks to buy up Magnetti Marelli, an auto-parts manufacturer under Fiat Chrysler.Samsung is in "advanced talks" to buy either some or all of Magnetti Marelli's business, Bloomberg reports. According to the outlet's sources, Samsung seems most interested in the telematics, infotainment and lighting side of the business. All in, the deal could eclipse $3 billion, Samsung's largest acquirement outside of its home base in South Korea.Neither company immediately retued requests for comment.Making more money is something Fiat's been trying hard to achieve for a while. It's stopping production of its compact sedans, the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200, because development costs are too high and no other automaker was willing to split the bill. Fiat Chrysler's placed its whole focus on high-margin trucks and SUVs, many of which lie within its Jeep brand. Despite a push for efficient vehicles, low gas prices have kept most buyers interested in thirstier vehicles, which may or may not be myopic on an impressive scale.But it's not like Samsung isn't making its own waves in the auto industry already. Bloomberg points that that Samsung's had a team focused on auto components, electronics and autonomy since December, and the company's Shanghai division bought a stake in Chinese auto manufacturer BYD for the not-that-princely sum of about $451 million. Josh Miller/CNET Samsung will tap into iris scanning to help you launch financial apps on the Galaxy Note 7.At its Unpacked event on Tuesday, Samsung announced that the new Galaxy Note 7 would be its first mobile device to offer iris recognition as a way to unlock the device. But the company also revealed that it will employ its Samsung Pass feature to work with the new iris scanner. That means you'll be able to use your eyes to securely open certain apps, most notably those that contain your financial information.With more people banking via their mobile devices, security has become a greater conce. Several phones offer fingerprint scanners as a way of unlocking mobile apps that contain sensitive information. But iris scanners are considered by many experts to be a more secure and accurate method of protecting the personal data on your smartphone.To integrate the new Pass capability into financial apps, Samsung is currently exploring the idea with six different banks, including Bank of America, Citi, US Bank, KEB Hana Bank, Shinhan Bank and Woori Bank, blog site AndroidCentral said on Tuesday. The company didn't reveal how far along it was in the process or when the Samsung Pass iris recognition might roll out to individual banking apps.The idea behind Samsung Pass is to replace your useames and passwords, and for more than just financial apps. Now, there's already chatter that the online retailer is ready to sell itself.The company, a rare new competitor for Amazon, is in talks to be bought up by Walmart, according to a report Wednesday from The Wall Street Joual. Jet could could be worth as much as $3 billion, the report said.Walmart declined to comment. Representatives for Jet didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.For Walmart, the deal could help in bolstering its e-commerce business, which is still tiny compared with its revenue from brick-and-mortar stores.
