Sand castles aren't exactly the most secure structures out there. Something as light as a pomeranian's paw can take them down like an earthquake, and a wave of a kid's Popsicle stick can send them crumbling. That's why a video from the Practical Engineering YouTube account posted Monday is so fascinating. In a little less than eight minutes, the narrator delivers a master class on how to reinforce simple soil by layering in stronger materials. Even a few layers of something as light as paper towels help him make a small sand tower strong enough to support a brick. And as his layering materials toughen up, so does the strength of his sand blocks.By the end of the video, you may still not feel ...

We've seen drones snatched out of the sky by everything from a flying pumpkin to an F-16 fighter jet. We now have an example of sheer human strength and determination, with video footage of a drone getting knocked out by a history reenactor with a spear. The drone filmed its own demise. You can see the warrior heft his weapon, take aim and launch it right at the camera. There's very little background available on the circumstances surrounding the video, other than that it takes place at a history festival in central Russia. There appears to be a battle reenactment happening on the ground, with armed fighters clashing in period-style gear while onlookers watch the proceedings. The presence of...

In addition to its number of venomous animals per capita, suy beaches and an interminable fascination with cricket, Australia puts the world to shame when it comes to piracy. Despite a relatively small population, our fair island state leads the world in "Game of Thrones" piracy (three years ruing, no less). But it's totally not our fault, says a new study conducted by Monash University. Or, at least, it explains why we don't feel so guilty about doing it.The study, headed up by PhD student Robert Eres, looks at brain activity when people pirate TV shows compared to something like good old-fashioned shoplifting. There was far more activity in the area of the brain associated with guilt where ...

When your toy drone hits a tree and crashes to the ground with a thunk, you laugh (a little). But that mirth will tu to tears if a drone you really care about, like this one delivering medical supplies where they're needed most, crashes to the ground and busts up its payload. Ruh-roh. That's why a company like ParaZero made this pint-size parachute to slow down an out-of-control drone as it plummets from the sky. The "SafeAir Pyrotechnic Parachute Recovery Solution" promises to kick in within milliseconds, let's the pilot customize the drop rate and says its 'chute is only 5 percent of the drone's weight, so it won't weigh it down too much. The YouTube demo above shows the 'chute in action. ...

Louie's caretaker, YouTube user Oliver Turpin, built the elaborate set complete with grazing areas, a pool, a visitors center and the iconic park gates. He's really only a threat to the grass growing in his park. In a way, Turpin's build brings the "Jurassic Park" story full circle since the secret to the velociraptor sound effects came was recordings of tortoi...

So what are they going to do when Bowser decides to max out his credit card and build the most awesome weapon the universe has ever seen? The Mario brothers would have no choice but to upgrade their weaponry and combine them with their existing powers and resources. The results might look something like a new video released on Friday by the short film studio Rizenvisual. The short film takes the characters from the Super Mario universe and surgically implants them in t...
